By using static and dynamic flow assays, the authors demonstrate that mucin O-glycans confer an antiadhesive character to the apical cell surface of corneal epithelial cells. These results suggest that mucin O-glycans prevent tarsal conjunctiva from adhering to corneal epithelium during blinking or sleeping, and that alteration of mucin O-glycans in ocular surface disease could induce epithelial damage by abrasive stress.

The authors show that yeast Msb2 and Hkr1, which are structurally related to mammalian cell surface-associated mucins, activate the HOG pathway in response to increased extracellular osmolarity. It is, therefore, possible to speculate that membrane-bound mucins may act as osmosensors in higher eukaryotes.
