In our earlier papers we expressed some concerns about whether a uniform electric field can cause a splitting of excited porphyrin states refs 17 and 21, In agreement with ref 15, we now think that a quadratic Stark effect can cause B-band splitting, but it is too small to account for Q-band splitting. We still differ from ref 15 with respect to the relevance of vibronic coupling for band splitting
