    • note
    • Eq. (3) is derived from the discussions in F.E. Mabbs, D.J. Machin (Eds.) Magnetism and Transition Metal Complexes, Wiley, New York, NY, 1973 (Chapter 7). An alternative formulation derived from an isosceles trimer model system has been solved by Haraldsen and Barnes for general spin ions using methods described in J.T. Haraldsen T. Barnes J.L. Musfeldt, Phys. Rev. B 71 (2005) 064403 and J.T. Haraldsen, Magnetic Properties and Inelastic Neutron Scattering for Small Spin Clusters, Ph.D Thesis, University of Tennessee, 2008. The exchange constant in this model is defined to be twice the size and opposite sign to the model derived from Mabbs & Machin given in Eq. (3), but after conversion for the different definitions of the hamiltonian, the results were the same. The Haraldsen-Barnes formulation is given in the Supplementary material: J.T. Haraldsen, T. Barnes, private communication, 2007.
