    • I borrow the term 'aspiring' from Michele Mitchell, Righteous Propagation: African Americans and the Politics of Racial Destiny after Reconstruction Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 2004, p. xx. As with African Americans in the Post-Reconstruction period, standard class labels do not apply to the Dominican Republic. Throughout the nineteenth century, Dominican society was divided between the traditional oligarchy and everyone else. By the late nineteenth century, however, everyone else' began to differentiate as the Dominican Republic entered the global market, capital accumulation occurred and cities grew. Merchants, professionals, intellectuals and government officials occupied an unstable middle ground between the very rich and the very poor. The term 'aspiring' captures both the nascent quality of this group, its tenuous existence and the process of class stratification taking place during this period in Dominican history
