Binik YM: Should dyspareunia be retained as a sexual dysfunction in DSM-V? A painful classification decision. Arch Sex Behav 2005, 34:11-21. The proposal that dyspareunia be considered a pain disorder that affects sex rather than a sexual disorder paved the way for new multidisciplinary treatment models that legitimize the woman's experience of pain; consider that physiologic, emotional, and relational components exist together; and provide cognitive-behavioral and physical treatment addressing pain.
