β-D-glucuronidase activity assay to assess viable Escherichia coli abundance in freshwaters
-
In this paper the authors found that the ratio between GLUase activity and viable E. coli (detected by DVC-FISH) had a broadly constant value, and therefore a slope value of one for the log-log regression line, when slightly to highly contaminated river waters were tested. The study indicates that at least for some freshwater locations, GLUase activity may be a reliable parameter for the rapid quantification of viable E. coli.
