    • Initially when compound 1a was treated with benzaldehyde for two hours, a single spot was obtained which was characterized as uncyclized product. This compound on further heating for two hours with PMA gave xanthene 3a. Thus, if the uncyclized products are further heated for couple of hours xanthenes will be the final products.
