Probably the most important message from the era of sensitive, quantitative LV parameters is that isolated diastolic heart failure is a misnomer that pertains to the insensitivity of traditional measures of LV function to subtle systolic changes. This group of authors has been among the leaders in identifying the parallel involvement of systolic and diastolic function.

An important paper in this field that demonstrates the presence of subtle systolic changes in asymptomatic diabetic subjects by a number of tissue characterization approaches as well as demonstrating the incremental effects of hypertrophy as well as diabetes.
