C-peptide exerts beneficial effects on myocardial blood flow and function in patients with type 1 diabetes
-
Hansen A, Johansson BL, Wahren J, von Bibra H: C-peptide exerts beneficial effects on myocardial blood flow and function in patients with type 1 diabetes. Diabetes 2002, 51:3077-3082. The first study to apply modern quantitative parameters for both regional function and perfusion to the study of diabetic heart muscle disease, as well as demonstrating a difference with intervention.

Left ventricular long axis function in diastolic heart failure is reduced in both diastole and systole: Time for a redefinition?
-
Yip G, Wang M, Zhang Y, et al.: Left ventricular long axis function in diastolic heart failure is reduced in both diastole and systole: time for a redefinition? Heart 2002, 87:121-125. Probably the most important message from the era of sensitive, quantitative LV parameters is that isolated diastolic heart failure is a misnomer that pertains to the insensitivity of traditional measures of LV function to subtle systolic changes. This group of authors has been among the leaders in identifying the parallel involvement of systolic and diastolic function.

Echocardiographic detection of early diabetic myocardial disease
-
Fang ZY, Yuda S, Anderson V, et al.: Echocardiographic detection of early diabetic myocardial disease. J Am Coll Cardiol 2003, 41:611-617. An important paper in this field that demonstrates the presence of subtle systolic changes in asymptomatic diabetic subjects by a number of tissue characterization approaches as well as demonstrating the incremental effects of hypertrophy as well as diabetes.

Subclinical left ventricular dysfunction in asymptomatic patients with Type II diabetes mellitus, related to serum lipids and glycated haemoglobin

Vinereanu D, Nicolaides E, Tweddel AC, et al.: Subclinical left ventricular dysfunction in asymptomatic patients with Type II diabetes mellitus, related to serum lipids and glycated haemoglobin. Clin Sci (Lond) 2003, 105:591-599. This work confirms the association of diabetes and subclinical heart disease, but in addition correlates these findings with biochemical disturbances and also shows the reciprocal enhancement of radial function when longitudinal function is impaired.
