    • Heterolytic cleavage of hydrogen by Pd complexes has been proposed before: K. Kaneda, T. Manaka, Trends Org. Chem. 1991, 2, 109. This is reinforced from our experiments using more polar and protic acid media, which show a significant increase in reaction rate, probably resulting from charge separation during the formation of intermediate species (more detailed studies for establishing reaction pathways are in progress).
