With use of the same batch of Adam's catalyst, the activity of the reduced Adam's catalyst was found to be somewhat variable. Adam's catalyst is a precatalyst consisting of PtO2, and its exposure to H2 generates the active Pt(0)-catalyst in situ. As a rule of thumb, the generation of fine black particles resulted in a highly active catalyst whereas the reaction was found to be slow when the particles stuck to the wall of the flask or bonded together to form small spheres
