Molecular diffusion of oil/water emulsions in surfactant-free conditions

Ostwald ripening and coalescence of surfactant-free oil (n-hexane, cyclohexane, n-octane, n-decane, n-dodecane, n-tetradecane and n-hexadecane) droplets were categorized in terms of the growth kinetics (LSW theory and Smoluchowski equations). Surface properties of surfactant-free oil droplets dispersed in water studied by confocal fluorescence microscopy

This work shows the successful measurement of the fluorescence spectra of dye molecules (DCM) located in the vicinity of droplet surface with a confocal microscope. The fluorescence spectra (measured in the case of 300-nm droplets and 2000-nm droplets in water) evaluated the higher surface polarity of surfactant-free n-decane droplets with smaller diameter.

Phase inversion of particle-stabilized materials from foams to dry water
-
Particular phase inversion of particle-stabilized air-water systems, from air-in-water foams to water-in-air powders and vice versa, was described in this paper. This phase inversion has not been observed in the corresponding systems stabilized by surfactants.
