Authors point out that the staging manuals do not specify when or how to measure tumor size. Raises a special problem in these large databases like SEER that we rely upon as the measurements are not standardized across sites, leading to potentially misleading data. One difference in this paper from common US clinical practice is that pathologists do not do frozen section examinations but only review formalin fixed specimens the next day. The authors also analyzed survival data showing misclassified patients had 5-year survival that was significantly different from the patients with T1 disease.
