(-1910), student of Schönlein and Traube, received his doctorate in 1853 in Berlin. In 1865 he became professor of medicine at Königsberg and in 1876 succeeded Traube in Berlin. Von Leyden was foremost in the movement for adequate hospital facilities (sanatoria) for tuberculous patients and specialized in neurological problems. Nothnagel was his assistant in Königsberg where Hecker was his student.

Treatment of the Insane without Mechanical Restraints

(1794-) was an English alienist who graduated in medicine from Edinburgh with a thesis entitled De statu mentis in insania et melancholia. After a period of teaching in London (University College) he became superintendent of Hanwell, a large asylum near London. His was translated into a number of languages and is considered as having been influential on the continent and in the USA.

(-1900) was a Prussian civil servant and politician who during the Bismarckian era joined the clerical conservative party and served various governments as deputy and minister. Against Bismarck's opposition, he started the process to simplify German orthography (first ordinance of 21 January 1880). His conservative views, however, were disliked by the rather liberal Frederick III, and in 1888 he had to leave the government. Rehabilitated in 1889 by the conservative William II, Puttkammer received the Order of the Black Eagle and was made Oberpräsident of Prussian Pomerania. He retired the year before his death.
