The perioperative cardiac arrest (POCA) registry offers the most comprehensive overview of the pediatric collective. The advantage of this multicenter voluntary registry, to provide descriptive associations of very rare events, has to be paid off by missing exact incidences and the inability to derive causal conclusions.

Anesthesiology 2007; 106:675-680. The greatest value of this study is identifying specific hazards for the anesthesia-related cardiac arrests. As a liability claim study, no incidences can be calculated from the data.

In over 5000 anesthetics, 41 cardiac arrests were observed. Only 11 were classified to be anesthesia related. All were resuscitated and had no long-term sequelae.
