Guilbert TW, Morgan WJ, Zeiger RS, et al. Long-term inhaled corticosteroids in preschool children at high risk for asthma. N Engl J Med 2006; 354:1985-1997. This trial was primarily designed to assess the capacity of inhaled corticosteroids to alter the natural course of early childhood wheezing in young children at high risk for asthma. While ICS therapy was not effective in altering the natural course of asthma, twice daily ICS therapy was associated with significant improvements in multiple aspects of asthma symptom burden.
