A very strong example of the article (or review article) versus monograph debate is the Annaliste approach to history. Lucien Febvre, a founder of the Annales School, published his most innovative reflections and historiographic innovations in periodical venues, so that his most important work was disseminated via his reviews of other scholars' work in the pages of the journal Annales.

A critical phenomenon is the development of conferences, which may result in proceedings that may later yield articles', book chapters, and, eventually, monographs. Sometimes new official societies arise and official organs are founded.

In library history, much of the scholarship on the history of libraries in the United States appears in periodical form, while monograph-length works are less well represented. Libraries and the Cultural Record (formerly Libraries and Culture, currently publishing its forty-second remains the primary publication venue for scholarship in library history. Another fruitful example is Book History which publishes critical studies in print, reading, and publishing cultures. Book History is the official organ of the Society for the History of Authorship, Reading, and Publishing SHARP, which is devoted to the study of all historical aspects of print, media, and publishing culture. Although venues exist for publishing library and book history, the dominance of the periodical research literature provides wider distribution within these discrete specializations
