    • Lawrence S. Bartell established an empirical rule dealing with the probability for a molecular gas to form solid or liquid particles in a supersonic jet expansion. Following this rule carbon monoxide has a "Bartell index" of 0.20 being well below the crucial value of 0.32 above which the liquid state is preferred.
