Contemporaries used the term Dominions to refer to the settler colonies: in 1907 Australia and New Zealand were formally granted the Dominion status enjoyed by Canada since 1867; South Africa achieved Dominion status with Union in 1910; the Irish Free State became a Dominion in 1922. Newfoundland and India remained ambiguous cases.
