Reference compounds listed in Table 2 and shown in Figure 2 include compounds of rhenium with various ligands. We recognize that the nature of the rhenium-ligand bonds may affect the rhenium edge position.

The feature in the range of 3-5 Å is expected to be mainly an indication of noise in this data set. This inference was drawn after several attempts to fit the feature (with one or several shells).

To ensure that these changes were not a result of inadvertent reoxidation of the sample during handling, each sample, subsequent to its characterization by XAS, was exposed to air and rescanned. The EXAFS spectrum of each oxidized sample includes a large Re-O contribution at approximately R, 1.7 Å, consistent with Re=O groups (also observed for typical rhenium oxide catalysts).25 Such a contribution was not observed in the samples before air exposure

In all fits, additional shells were added; however, the fit quality decreased, as shown by the goodness of fit parameter8 and the value of (ΔΧ).23

30 for supported platinum particles. However, in contrast to these observations with the platinum particles, we observed an increase in the white-line intensity after the apparent reduction of the trirhenium clusters. However, we cannot rule out the influence of other changes in the clusters occurring during catalysis.
