This study looked at a large cohort of patients with CEP and compared the timing of diagnosis, the natural history, and the response to treatment in those with accompanying asthma.

This case report documents a picture reminiscent of CEP, a disorder similar to bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia, that occurred after radiation therapy as treatment for breast cancer.

Interstitial eosinophilic infiltrates have been reported in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. AEP is believed to be responsive to systemic corticosteroids. This case report documents a patient with AEP who was unresponsive to therapy and died within 3 days of diagnosis.
31. Kawayama Tc Fujiki R, Honda J, et al.: High concentration of (1-3)-B-D-glucan in BAL fluid in patients with acute eosinophilic pneumonia. Chest 2003, 123:1302-1307. The cause of AEP is unknown but is believed to be a hypersensitivity reaction to some substance. This report suggests that a component of fungal cell walls may be at fault.

The pathogenetic mechanisms that result in the clinical manifestations of AEP are unknown. This report suggests that the secretion of vascular endothelial growth factor may play a key role.

Patients may be able to tolerate cigarette smoke even after experiencing AEP soon after they begin the habit. This report documents the resumption of the habit and successful treatment of AEP.
