In addition to the observations presented in Fig. 11, we have also measured the refractive indices (Formula presented) and (Formula presented) for light polarized parallel and perpendicular to the optic axis of the N phase and the mean index (Formula presented) in the I phase. We have confirmed that the relation (Formula presented) holds through the (Formula presented) transition, as expected for a uniaxial N phase.
10. Preliminary x-ray scattering on 12-CPOB shows the expected disappearance of the layer reflection at the smectic-nematic transition. S. Kumar (private communication).
