The Committee has written a nice summary of the reasons medical neglect occurs including both family/patient factors and physician factors. A practical approach is detailed with a list of escalating step-wise interventions. Included are discussions of medical neglect in special circumstances: for religious reasons, when the child is chronically ill and when medical treatment is of unclear benefit.

Finkelhor D. Prevention of sexual abuse through educational programs directed toward children. Pediatrics 2007; 120:640-645. In this well-referenced commentary, the author, a leader in the field, rebuts arguments questioning the utility of education-based prevention for children, with a special emphasis on the criticism that such programs place too much of a burden on children. He makes a strong case for the role of these programs in an array of preventive efforts.

MacMillan HL, Jamieson E, Wathen CN, et al. Development of a policy-relevant child maltreatment research strategy. Milbank Q 2007; 85:337-374. The authors have reviewed the current child maltreatment research scene critically with regard to epidemiological studies, and treatment and prevention programs. They have proposed a comprehensive research agenda with an emphasis on translation of research findings into policy proposals that will decrease the burden of child maltreatment. An interesting component of the review is the result of interviews conducted with a range of child abuse experts soliciting their opinions regarding gaps in our understanding of child maltreatment.
