Ramachandran S, Desai NM, Goers TA, et al. Improved islet yields from pancreas preserved in perfluorocarbon is via inhibition of apoptosis mediated by mitochondrial pathway. Am J Transplant 2006; 6:1696-1703. As perfluorocarbon increases islet yields, this study evaluated the mechanism by which islets undergo apoptosis and determine the effects of perfluorocarbon on this process. Gene array analysis was used to analyze the expression of pro- and antiapoptotic genes in islets isolated from pancreata preserved under varying conditions. They showed that reduction in hypoxia of pancreata preserved using perfluorocarbon leads to significant upregulation of antiapoptotic and inhibition of proapoptotic genes.

Nakao A, Toyokawa H, Tsung A, et al. Ex vivo application of carbon monoxide in University of Wisconsin solution to prevent intestinal cold ischemia/reperfusion injury. Am J Transplant 2006; 6:2243-2255. This study examined whether ex-vivo delivery of carbon monoxide in UW solution could ameliorate intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury. Carbon monoxide induces HO-1, increased graft cyclic guanosine monophosphate levels, and improved graft blood flow. The authors suggest that ex-vivo carbon monoxide delivery into UW solution would be a simple and innovative therapeutic strategy to improve quality of grafts.
