Alison Isenberg used the phrase "idealized public space" to discuss the symbolic significance of America's downtowns, but the phrase applies equally to amusement parks. For the argument that "the public in America has always been segregated and walled off," see Bryant Simon, Boardwalk of Dreams: Atlantic City and the Fate of Urban America (New York, 2004), 17.

Kassay and Golba quoted in Rossi, ed.
-
Robinson interview, 12-13; Nevergold interview, p. 5. Buffalo resident Paul Kassay believed that the Crystal Beach riot was the "nail in the coffin" for the Canadiana. Donald Golba remembered that families stopped taking the Canadiana for the remainder of the 1956 season. Kassay and Golba quoted in Rossi, ed., Crystal Beach, 72, 85.
