We have systematically used the colorimetric method to calculate the reaction yield because its easiness and sufficient accuracy for our purposes. The conductimetric titration of the free carboxylate groups, other possible way to determine the yield of the esterification reaction, is not applicable in our case, because the molecules of linked CV have a positive charge and the corresponding counter-ion, chloride; this last ion can be displaced, totally or partially, in the role of neutralize the positive charge by the remaining carboxylate or sulfate groups in the surface of the spheres. Furthermore, the hydroxyl groups of the base used in the titration can attack, in some extent, to the positively charged carbon atom in a well known reaction destroying the NLO dye. This last reaction is not as fast as an acid-base one, but it can be enough to introduce an indeterminate factor of inexactitude.
