Probably the first critical review in this matter was J.T. Edsall, H.A. McKenzie, Adv. Biophys. 10 (1978) 137-207. See also the more recent, excellent review: Paulaitis M.E., Garde Sh., Ashbaugh H.S., Curr. Opin. Colloid Interface Sci. 1 (1996) 376-383.

It is interesting that the shortest compounds fit well to tendencies observed for the series under investigation. This is a very well known observation that in a homologous series, its first member does not fit well to the overall tendency. A good example is water treated as the first member of the series of alcohols. Recently, the same was found for a series of oxyethylenes and their partial molar compressibilities in water changing linearly with the number of oxyethylene units in the molecule, with some exception of the shortest compound: T. Seimiya, J. Colloid Interface Sci. 266 (2003) 422-429.
