note
-
Members of five CABs attended a debate and capacity building forum on 'Ethical-Legal Regulation of Research in South Africa: Implications for HIV Vaccine Trials', hosted by the HIV/AIDS Vaccine Working Group in Durban, South Africa in 2004. I was fortunate enough to facilitate a group session on informed consent, which included all the CAB members. I experienced first hand how articulately CAB members could express community concerns regarding issues such as unassisted adolescent consent. Researchers from the Desmond Tutu TB Centre at Stellenbosch University are currently involved in a very large public health research project-ZAMSTAR. They are working with CABs across 16 communities in South Africa and Zambia. A well-established CAB in Khayelitsha has worked with various groups of researchers from the University of Cape Town and Stellenbosch University (personal communication with investigators). Dr Nathaniel Khaole from the Department of Human Genetics, University of Cape Town has actively involved CABs in rural areas of the Western Cape, over a period of several years, in community based genetic studies into foetal alcohol syndrome.
