Experiments were carried out on a Cu(111) surface with NaCl and Xe insulating layers, on Cu(100) and Cu(311) with NaCl, on Cu(331) with RbI, and on bare Cu(100). Cu single crystals were cleaned by several sputtering-annealing cycles, and thermal evaporation was used to deposit NaCl or RbI so that defect-free, (100)-terminated islands of up to three atomic layers were formed.

Phthalocyanine molecules on a monolayer of RbI are negatively charged. The LUMO becomes a singly occupied molecular orbital that can be probed at either negative or positive bias, corresponding to electron removal or addition, respectively (25).
