ILs bearing non-coordinating counterions may also be obtained via direct alkylation of amines or phosphines with alkyl sulfates, sulfonates, triflates, etc. An advantage of the methodology described herein is the ability to prepare ILs in which the alkyl groups within the cation and anion components are nonequivalent.
