The STM hardly can identify the cis or trans shape of the connecting backbone. Instead, we have compared these results with a similar molecular specie functionalized on para sites (diparacyano azobenzene (DPC)), because here the rotation around β leaves the molecular appearance unchanged. In this case only, features associated to trans isomers can be observed on the Au(111) surface. The absence of cis-DPC on the Au(111) indicates that a planar cis conformation is not a stable configuration, which presumably also applies to DMC
