Migration and schizophrenia
-
Selten J-P, Cantor-Graae E, Kahn RS. Migration and schizophrenia. Curr Opin Psychiatry 2007; 20:111-115. This paper reviews and evaluates studies that find an increased risk for schizophrenia among first- and second-generation migrants. There is strong evidence against selective migration as an explanation. There is increasing focus on the impact of social stressors on brain functioning and on the pathogenesis of schizophrenia

Schizoaffective disorders are mood disorders; there are no schizoaffective disorders

Lake CR, Hurwitz N. Schizoaffective disorders are mood disorders; there are no schizoaffective disorders. Psychiatry Res 2006; 143:255-287. This article reviews the origins of the concept of schizo-affective psychoses in the writings of Jacob Kasanin, and argues that the shift away from schizophrenia should now be completed by recognizing schizo-affective psychosis as a mood disorder with a broad spectrum of severity

Special issue on circular insanity and beyond: Historic contributions of French psychiatry to contemporary concepts and research on bipolar disorder
-
Akiskal H. Special issue on circular insanity and beyond: historic contributions of French psychiatry to contemporary concepts and research on bipolar disorder. J Affect Disord 2006; 96:141-143. This article serves to introduce a series of papers, based upon the classic French notion of cyclic mood disorder, that examine the extent to which the bipolar spectrum concept can be expanded to include and account for a variety of disorders, including schizoaffective disorders, substance abuse disorders, some anxiety disorders and some personality disorders.

Why are immigrants at increased risk for psychosis? Vitamin D insufficiency, epigenetic mechanisms, or both?
-
Dealberto MJ. Why are immigrants at increased risk for psychosis? Vitamin D insufficiency, epigenetic mechanisms, or both? Med Hypothesis 2007; 68:259-267. Vitamin D deficiency is one more credible suspect in the search for causal or contributing risk factors for schizophrenia. The vitamin D hypothesis accounts for several observations about risks for schizophrenia, in addition to adverse social factors, in dark-skinned immigrants to northern countries, including higher rates in the second generation of migrant families.

Environment and schizophrenia: Environmental factors in schizophrenia: childhood trauma - A critical review
-
Morgan C, Fisher H. Environment and schizophrenia: environmental factors in schizophrenia: childhood trauma - a critical review. Schizophr Bull 2007; 33:3-10. The authors review the research investigating the association between childhood trauma and schizophrenia, with the conclusion that the data do not support a causal connection. There is general support for the association between childhood trauma and a variety of adult mental health problems, perhaps including the risk of experiencing psychotic symptoms, but this falls short of a convincing connection to schizophrenia.

-
Bentall R. Madness explained: why we must reject the Kraepelinian paradigm and replace it with a 'complaint-oriented' approach to understanding mental illness. Med Hypotheses 2006; 66:220-233. This article is a summary of Bentall's argument advanced in his book Madness Explained: Psychosis and Human Nature (2003), which argues against Kraepelinian paradigms, and specifically against the 20th century formulations of schizophrenia and manic-depressive illness. The author postulates adverse environmental factors as the major causes of major mental illnesses.
