While Sarkar represents the traditional view, modern research is represented by historians like Muzaffar Alam, who, in his The Crisis of Empire in Mughal North India: Awadh and the Punjab, 1707-48 Delhi: Oxford University Press, 1986, speaks of economic growth in north India during the first half of the eighteenth century

Michael Roberts, "The Military Revolution, 1560-1660," in Clifford J. Rogers, ed., The Military Revolution Debate: Readings on the Military Transformation of Early Modern Europe (Boulder, Colo.: Westview, 1995), 13-35. In medieval Europe, the infantry was deployed on the battlefield in a haphazard manner. But the Spanish Army organized their infantry in a deep square formation known as the tercio, which resembled the unwieldy Macedonian phalanx. Gustavus Adolphus increased the maneuverability of his infantry by deploying them in small units known as regiments which were further subdivided into battalions. Gustavus was influenced by the Roman Army's legion which was composed of several maniples.
