This longitudinal study shows that Reduced concentration of 25(OH)-vitamin D in mothers during late pregnancy was associated with reduced whole-body and lumbar-spine bone-mineral content in children at age 9 years. The authors suggest that vitamin D supplementation of pregnant women, especially during winter months, could lead to longlasting reductions in the risk of osteoporotic fracture in their children.

Nat Genet 2006; 38:1248-1250. Mutation of the DMP-1 gene at 4p21 which encodes a noncollagenous bone matrix protein expressed in osteoblasts and osteocytes has been identified in subjects with autosomal recessive hypophosphataemic rickets. Two of these subjects have an elevated FGF23. Crucially, this may suggest that osteocyte/osteoblast DMP-1 may be an important upstream regulator of FGF23.
