PEG-assisted solvent and catalyst free synthesis of 3,4-dihydropyrimidinones under mild reaction conditions

    • General experimental procedure: a stirred mixture containing the aldehyde (2 mmol), urea/thiourea (2 mmol), β-dicarbonyl compound (2 mmol) and PEG-400 (0.2 g) was heated at 100 °C for 45 min. After completion, the reaction mixture became a solid with a yellow color, which was separated and washed with water. The resulting crude product was recrystallized with ethanol to afford pure 3,4-dihydropyirimidinones. All the products were characterized by comparing their physical and spectral data with those of reported compounds
