Luminescence from CdS often comes from mid-gap states which are generally related to defects and are insensitive to particle size. The emission in our particles at 540 nm is consistent with spherical particles ca. 6 nm: P. Nandakumar, C. Vijayan, Y. V. G. S. Murti, J. Appl. Phys. 2002, 91, 1509. However, the AFM images show that the particles are not spherical and it is difficult to assign the transition responsible for this emission

The square-shaped background in Figure 4b only appears after examination of the sample by SEM and matches exactly the area imaged by the SEM shown in Figure 4a. We suggest that this relates to beam damage.

The value indicates that the material is doped. It is known that doping solution-deposited CdS with inorganic anions (e.g., borate) dramatically increases the conductivity. We suggest that the phosphate groups of the DNA backbone play a similar role in the CdS nanowires reported here. J.-H. Lee, J.-S. Yi, K.-J. Yang, J.-H. Park, R.-D. Oh, Thin Solid Films 2003, 431-432, 344.
