The rejection of the colonial and fascist past in Portugal resulted in negative responses to the retornados, who were portrayed as having exploited the colonized. This conveniently pushed aside issues of metropolitan responsibility, as Colonialism became the presence and actions of those living in the colonies, putting aside any ideas that located colonialism within the realm of political and economic structures.

This also explains the vehemence with which Istrians have told me, "We were not colonists!" and why they reject my classification of their experience together with that of Italians from the colonies.
