    • Hydrogen-driven subsurface lithoautotrophic microbial ecosystems (SLiMEs): do they exist and why should we care?
    • Within this paper, a definition of a true subsurface lithoautotrophic microbial ecosystem (SliME) is described as an ecosystem that is solely energetically powered by the geosphere, both for its energy sources and its oxidants, free from any electron donors and acceptors generated by photosynthesis or its products. The debate on the existence of SliMEs triggers the hypothesis of life on early Earth as being non-photosynthetic in origin, as well as the hypothesis of the existence of life in the absence of photosynthetically active radiation on other planetary bodies.

    • Taking the pulse of Earth's life support systems
    • The paper provides a summary of the main conclusions of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA), initiated in 2001, for evaluating the durability of the world's ecosystems and the sustainability of the services that they provide. The sore points of how we currently manage ecosystems are identified. Problematic likewise is the non-existence of basic information necessary to perform accurate predictions on the future state of ecosystems. The MA tried to translate the consequences of ecosystem changes in economically important parameters. By reformatting the consequences of ecosystem changes in how it influences human well-being, hands-on information is provided for policy makers to make the necessary decisions.
