    • Although the article reporting the synthesis of pentaerythrityl tetraazide (14)65 describes isolating the material as a crystalline product, we strongly discourage handling this material in neat form and instead recommend working with it only in solution due to its potentially explosive nature. The commonly referred to rule of six which stipulates that there should be six carbons for every high energy functional group, such as an azide, within a molecule for it to be safe is clearly violated in the case of 14 and thus validates our concerns. We have had no problems, however, storing the compound and working with the compound in toluene solutions
