A final point to make in this historical context is the capacity of the stage proper - the designated place of performance - to interact with and to influence the broader processes and manifestations of urban performance. In her critique of a book by David L. Smith about seventeenth-century London, Emma Smith introduces the idea of 'metropolitan self-fashioning', referring to 'the reality of the early modern stage, and its capacity to shape as well as reflect social categories as part of the discursive production of a theatricalized London'. So a braided relationship is being suggested here, between the stage proper and the overtly, self-consciously theatrical elements of city life.
