The shocking reality of the anesthetic services in the Ugandan health system is conveyed in the results of this survey. Twenty-three percent of anesthesia providers, representative of hospitals with an average annual surgical caseload of around 7500, could provide safe anesthesia for adults, 13% for children and only 6% for Caesarean section. Lack of facilities, i.e. no electrical supply in 41% hospitals, unreliable oxygen source in 20% and running water in only 56, affects the whole healthcare system. Also see the accompanying Editorial [48, whose message is a plea to the goodwill of anesthetists for a financial contribution to improve anesthesia in poor countries
