Translational repression is sufficient for gene silencing by bacterial small noncoding RNAs in the absence of mRNA destruction
-
This study showed that translational repression and mRNA degradation can be uncoupled for at least two sRNA-mRNA pairs. These results imply that, at least in these cases, translational repression can be the primary regulatory step for negative regulation by sRNAs.

Base-pairing requirement for RNA silencing by a bacterial small RNA and acceleration of duplex formation by Hfq
-
This is one of few studies where base-pairing determinants were carefully dissected. The authors showed genetically and biochemically that complementarity between SgrS and ptsG mRNA is required for physical interactions between the two RNAs and for regulation of ptsG.

Implication of membrane localization of target mRNA in the action of a small RNA: mechanism of post-transcriptional regulation of glucose transporter in Escherichia coli
-
This study provides evidence that base pairing between SgrS and ptsG mRNA is not sufficient for regulation in vivo. A novel regulatory mechanism involving cotranslational membrane association of the ptsG mRNA is apparently needed to enable SgrS to function.
