This paper describes one of the rare successful attempts to induce male sterility by nuclear transformation with a mitochondrial candidate gene, the product of which is targeted to the mitochondria. It is also particularly interesting in its description of deciphering a complex restoration locus, and its report of two related restoration genes with different effects on the sterility gene transcript.

Reports an impressive number of results on the expression of Arabidopsis mitochondrial genes in a B. napus nuclear background. It illustrates the deregulation of several latent mitochondrial ORFs, which are silent in their original background but expressed when associated with the nuclear genome of another species. These results could also account for the ease with which alloplasmic combinations lead to male sterility in angiosperms.
