    • ••], provide the first description of changes in gene expression during the development of the ectomycorrhizal symbiosis. This work shows that the development of the symbiosis induces striking alteration in the expression of both transcripts that encode cell surface proteins and transcripts that are involved in carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism, signaling pathways and defense reactions. No ectomycorrhiza-specific genes were detected.

    • The genome of black cottonwood, Populus trichocarpa
    • The first description of the genome sequence of a tree species P. trichocarpa that is able to interact with both endo- and ectomycorrhizal fungi. This genomic resource will have a great impact on the analysis of mycorrhizal symbioses. Populus harbors two genes that have been identified as endomycorrhiza-specific and ectomycorrhizal-induced phosphate transporters, confirming that the mycorrhizal symbiosis might have a significant impact on the mineral nutrition of this long-lived species. It is a major touchstone for future research on perennial species and mycorrhizas.

    • Spatial patterns of gene expression in the extramatrical mycelium and mycorrhizal root tips formed by the ectomycorrhizal fungus Paxillus involutus in association with birch (Betula pendula) seedlings in soil microcosms
    • Using soil microcosms of increased ecological complexity, more genomics studies of the kind discussed herein will advance our understanding of mycorrhizal symbioses in situ. The authors investigated the gene expression of the mycobiont in the major hyphal compartments (i.e. symbiotic root tissues, the web of rhizomorphic hyphae permeating the soil and the fungal patches proliferating on nutrient sources). Preferentially expressed genes were identified in these various compartments, illustrating the physiological heterogeneity of the fungal mycelia. It is a major touchstone for future research.
