    • In a system with high FRET efficiency, donor emission will occur rarely or not at all. However, for a very strong excitation field, the excitation rate can be large as compared to the acceptor emission rate, and donor absorption may occur when the acceptor is already/still in the excited state. In this situation, which is termed exciton blockade, FRET can not occur, since the acceptor is already excited. Hence, even for a system with high FRET efficiency, donor emission can be seen, provided that the excited state lifetime of the donor is comparable with or shorter than the excited state lifetime of the acceptor. Additionally, no annihilation or quenching of the donor excited state by the accepter excited state should occur for the donor emission to be observed. For a literature example of an exciton blockade, see: Berglund, A.J, Doherty, A.C, Mabuchi, H. Phys. Rev. Lett. 2002, 89, 068101

    • n transition, an excited donor showing an unfavorable orientation for FRET can in principle undergo singlet-singlet annihilation with the excited acceptor. However, since the decay time of the unfavorable oriented donor is exactly the same as that for the donor model compound PI (4 ns), for this particular donor-acceptor dendrimer, changed transition dipole moments are not an issue.
