Adv Ther 2006; 23:511-518. In this in-vitro study comparing the relative toxicity of the new formulation of travoprost 0.004% without BAC (travatan Z) with that of latonoprost 0.005% (0.02% BAC) on the immortalized HCEs, travatan Z was significantly less toxic than latonoprost (P<0.05). This might be of great value for patients who use topical glaucoma medications on a long-term basis.

Whitson JT, Cavanagh HD, Lakshman N, Petroll WM. Assessment of corneal epithelial integrity after acute exposure of ocular hypotensive agents preserved with and without benzalkonium chloride. Adv Ther 2006; 23:1-9. A prospective in-vivo study conducted on the corneas of rabbits treated with either BAC-free travoprost 0.004% or latanoprost 0.005% (0.02%BAC) using confocal microscopy. Treatment with latanoprost caused pathological changes in the cornea while corneas treated with BAC-free travoprost were unaffected with no significant changes in epithelial cells, suggesting that this alternative preservative may offer patients with glaucoma a reduction in adverse events.
