27. We present a simple deterministic theory (cf. D. Robertson and G. M. Pound, J. Cryst. Growth JCRGAE 0022-0248 19, 269 (1973)) for the distribution, f (s), of island sizes, s, at the final coverage, θ. Assume that islands are nucleated at rate Knuc (φ), and all grow at the same rate, Ragg (φ), dependent on the instantaneous coverage, φ. The final size of an island nucleated at coverage θ′ <θ satisfies s (θ′) α θ′ <φ<θ dφ Ragg (φ), with maximum smax =s (0). One then has f (s) α Knuc [θ′ (s)] Ragg [θ′ (s)], for s< smax. Here, θ′ (s) is the unique nucleation coverage producing an island of size s, so θ′ (s) decreases with increasing s. Thus, Kagg (φ) Ragg (φ) increasing with φ produces f (s) decreasing with s.
