Multicentric, randomized, controlled trial to evaluate blood glucose control by the model predictive control algorithm versus routine glucose management protocols in intensive care unit patients. Diabetes Care 2006; 29:271-276. Performance of a model predictive control algorithm is described, having a glucoregulatory model with individual parameters that are adapted on-line; using glucose concentration, insulin dosage, and carbohydrate intake as input variables; having a dose optimizer that proposes future insulin infusion rates and tunes the rates until the predicted glucose excursion fits into the desired glucose excursion; and having eventual potential to be used in conjunction with the actual carbohydrate and insulin delivery system.
