J Am Coll Surg 2005; 201:680-687. This article presents the second largest series of total pancreatectomy/IATs outside of Minnesota, that of the University of Cincinnati, with 45 patients done between 2000 and 2004. A 40% rate of insulin independence in all recipients was reported at 18-month follow up. Factors correlating with insulin independence included sex (higher in females) and low weight. Higher islet yields were reported in the insulin independent group. Pain was alleviated or reduced to allow narcotic-independence in 58% of their patients.
