The sodium salt of this compound (1) was obtained by adding a solution of 5-hydroxyisophthaldehyde (1.205 g, 7.9 mmol) in THF (20 mL) to a suspension of NaH (0.187 g, 7.8 mmol) in THF (6 mL) cooled by an ice bath. The mixture was left stirring overnight, then the solvent was eliminated via a filtering canula. The crude product was washed with four portions of THF. Compound 1 was isolated as an orange powder in 73% yield. It was used for the synthesis of dendrimers without characterization, due to its very poor solubility.
