A study of residents of two Jerusalem suburbs - one directly exposed to recurrent terrorist activities over a 10-month period and one indirectly exposed shows comparable PTSD rates of 26.95 and 21.35%, respectively. In this context of continuous terror, the proximity effect is not observed and the authors discuss this and related issues.

    • PTSD following terrorist attacks: A prospective evaluation
    • Shalev AY, Freedman S. PTSD following terrorist attacks: a prospective evaluation. Am J Psychiatry 2005; 162:1188-1191. A prospective comparison of terrorist attack survivors and motor vehicle accident survivors in Israel shows higher rates of PTSD in the former group after 4 months. Early symptoms were found to decline in a similar manner regardless of the original trauma, and initial responses such as heart rate, peritraumatic dissociation and early PTSD symptoms were predictive of PTSD at 4 months regardless of the nature of the traumatic event.
